2007 Albariño

Perhaps the most highly prized white grape of Spain and Portugal, Albariño is in many ways the crown jewel of Iberian whites. Famous for the crisp, delicate, yet full-flavored wines it produces in Galicia, this varietal is also used to make the refreshing but comparatively lightweight Vinho Verde of the Minho Valley in Portugal. Thought to be a descendant of Riesling, Albariño shares some of its Northern counterpart’s characteristics, but it is also notably different in its tendency towards fresh peach and lemon aromas, a greater capacity for a muscular depth, and the distinctive grapefruit to mineral component it often imparts to the finish. Combining something of the body of a Chardonnay with the trim, crispness of a Sauvignon Blanc, the wines made from this unique varietal are unmistakable and can be quite remarkable.

Despite its classic association with Spain’s cool western Atlantic coast, Albariño is surprisingly versatile and has found its way throughout much of the Iberian peninsula. In recent years, it has even begun to make tentative inroads into the vineyards of the New World, as both winemakers and consumers have gained a greater appreciation for the potential of Spanish and Portuguese varietals. Our 2007 Albariño, grown in our vineyards in southern Monterey County, provides an excellent illustration of the promise and versatility of this unique varietal.  Traces of lemon and honeysuckle on the nose give way to notes of apple and pear, while a touch of grapefruit is present on the finish.
