TempranilloLong recognized as the flagship varietal of the Iberian peninsula, Tempranillo has been the basis of noble wines for centuries. Famed for its role as the primary component of Spain's Rioja, Tempranillo is an indispensible feature of the Spanish viticultural landscape and is one of the most widely planted varietals in Spain and Portugal. Known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal, where it is used to make excellent varietal and regional wines, it is also one of the main varietals approved for use in Port, and thus makes up an important part of our Vinho Doce. Grown in virtually all regions of Spain and Portugal, it performs well in a wide variety of climates and is capable of producing wines of very different styles and characters. Though still not extensively well known in the U.S., in the last few years Tempranillo has finally begun to make a name for itself in the New World as well, as many here have come to realize its distinctive virtues and potential.Grown on the rocky slopes of our "Y" Ranch vineyard, our 2005 Tempranillo boasts a vibrant, fruit-driven character that is in some ways reminiscent of the wines of the Duero. Aromas of vanilla and cherry are accompanied by lively berry flavors, led prominently by the strawberry that is a typical characteristic of the varietal. Faint earthy elements with distinct accents of dark chocolate and a trace of spice balance themselves against the relative brightness of the fruit. Aged in American, French and Hungarian oak for 18 months, it has also been bottle aged for an additional year. With its rich fruit, approachable, supple tannins, and medium body, this is a beautiful wine with a vaguely rustic elegance. Pairing exceptionally well with lamb and beef, our Tempranillo also nicely complements lighter fare as well, and is, in general, extremely versatile. Of course, it also provides a natural counterpart for many traditional Spanish foods, ranging from paella to heartier chorizo. 157 cases produced 14.4% alcohol 750 ml $19.95 Purchase Now
