2006 Tempranillo
Long recognized as the flagship varietal of the Iberian Peninsula, Tempranillo has been the basis of noble wines for centuries. Famed for its role as the primary component of Spain's Rioja, Tempranillo is an indispensible feature of the Spanish viticultural landscape and is one of the most widely planted varietals in Spain and Portugal. Just now beginning to receive wider attention in the New World, this varietal is proving to acquit itself well in warmer regions at higher elevations such as the San Antonio Valley.
Our 2006 Tempranillo was estate-grown in the mix of calcareous rock, broken shale, decomposed granite, and clay of our Y Ranch vineyard. Fermented in small lots, it was aged in American, French and Hungarian oak for 18 months and bottle aged for an additional year. A medium-bodied wine with spirited tannins, a velvety texture, and bright fruit, the 2006 vintage shows its supposed lineage, demonstrating a character similar to that of Pinot Noir. Sour cherry and raspberry combine with notes of cola, roasted meats, and a touch of florality.
Exceptionally versatile on the table, this wine pairs especially well with salmon, chicken, and pork, while it also partners nicely with lamb and tomato-based sauces.
