2005 Tinto CãoA rarity in the United States, Tinto Cão is a distinctive Portuguese varietal capable of producing unique, intriguing wines that defy description. Its name translating as "red dog," the varietal was so dubbed, apparently, because of its tendency towards less than prolific yields. Notwithstanding this somewhat derogatory moniker, for centuries this varietal has enjoyed the respect of winemakers throughout Portugal, particularly in the Douro. With typically small berries and thick skins, it is famed for its dark color, floral aromas, and intensity, and it is often used in blends to help add depth to less distinguished vintages. Tinto Cão is also one of the traditional components in Port, to which it tends to impart lovely, rich floral notes and strong, bracing middle elements. Though not as frequently used to make varietal wines - and very rarely used as such in the U.S. - when it is, the results can be remarkable. Our 2005 vintage gives testament to this varietal's ability to stand on its own as well as to its somewhat exotic qualities. Reasonably light in body and color, its aromas of rose and gardenia on the nose give way to restrained flavors of cherry accented by vanilla. On the finish, notes reminiscent of pomegranate give evidence of a sturdy acidity. With a notably low 12.2% alcohol, this wine is presented in something of the Old World style, and, as such, it exhibits a sort of unconventional subtlety. Decidedly idiosyncratic yet strangely elegant, this is a truly interesting, distinctive wine.
