2005 Touriga"Touriga" is the name applied to a constellation of Portuguese varietals that create exceptional wines prized for their wildflower aromas and marked complexity. While U.S. labeling laws only allow the use of the generic term "Touriga", in truth, this designation usually refers to either one or both of the two varietals known in Portugal as Touriga Francesa and Touriga Nacional. Frequently used in the making of Port, both varietals are also known to produce excellent stand-alone wines that run the range from subtle and quietly sophisticated to exquisitely unusual. Touriga Nacional, perhaps Portugal's finest indigenous varietal, is especially notable in this regard, creating multifaceted, elegant wines that are, very simply, unlike any other. Touriga Francesa can often be less overtly unusual, but what it lacks in pyrotechnics it makes up for in delicacy. We grow both varietals in our vineyards, currently using Touriga Nacional as one of the components in our Port-style dessert wine, Vinho Doce, while creating a small amount of varietal wine from the Touriga Francesa.
